Dear Peabody families,
Another year is underway and I trust everyone had a good summer. For those families who are new to Peabody, I want to welcome you and introduce myself, my name is Melissa McCune and this is my 4th year here at Peabody as the k-5 art teacher. We have a lot returning projects and some new surprises. This year's newsletter I wanted to outline some items of interest to parents and students that will come up throughout the school and on going.
Special Events, Displays & Art Shows:
· Original Works Art fund raiser-We will be doing the Original Works fund raiser this fall to help with PTO ·Bemis Library LPS Elementary Schools Art Show- Jan 4-27
·Curtis Fine Arts Center Art Show -March
·Peabody All School Art Show- April 28, 6:00-7:30
·Rotating Art Exhibits- all year Grades k-5 art work will be displayed in the hallway throughout the school year
ESC art display in the cafeteria- December 1-31
Curriculum: While following the Colorado Model Content Standards for Visual Art and LPS Visual Arts Curriculum your student will be learning about many things:
· Principles of Design (unity, balance, contrast, pattern, rhythm, emphasis, movement)
· Elements of Art (line, space, form, texture, value, color, shape)
· Art History / Art from different cultures
· Artists
· Observing, describing & analyzing various works of art, including their own
· Using a variety of mediums, tools, techniques and processes
· Incorporating classroom curriculum (science, social studies, writing …etc) into the art projects
These are just a few examples that will differ depending on the grade level. Some projects take longer than others and you may not see any work for several weeks. The artwork may also be on display and saved for an art show.
Classroom Expectations: These are discussed very clearly the first day of art with the students. They are displayed in the front of the classroom for everyone to see each time students come to art class. Please remind students they are important to follow in order to be the most productive we can be. As teacher, it is my job to provide these expectations so we can all have fun and devote every second to successful learning.
Volunteer: Please let me know if you are interested in helping out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in cutting paper, mounting art work, hanging the rotating art displays, helping the art shows there is a spot for you- (No artistic talent needed just a willingness to help out) :)
I am looking forward to working with your student and I hope to inspire a new interest, talent and appreciation of art that will last a lifetime. Any questions please contact me at school or e-mail at mmccune@lps.k12.co.us
